Getting Potassium in Your Diet

Potassium is a mineral especially valuable to your body. It functions as a catalyst in the nervous system, helping the muscles (including mind, heart and kidneys) working at maximum capacity. Without having an adequate amount of potassium in the body, certain side effects would begin to take their toll. Some of these are fatigue, weakness, confusion, heart irregularities, etc. Generally speaking, insufficient levels of potassium decrease the body’s ability to function effectively. It becomes tired and weak as a result. So how can we make sure to avoid this condition? Having plenty of potassium rich foods in the diet is the best way to start.

There are lots of foods with vitamins and minerals essential to your body’s health, but where does the potassium come from? Usually, hyperkalemia is associated with an underlying medical condition such as diabetes; therefore most do not need to worry about having too much potassium. Talk to a doctor if you have further questions on hyperkalemia. On the other side of the coin, hypokalemia affects those who do not consume enough of those foods rich in potassium. One with hypokalemia will often experience muscle cramps and weakness as well as the occasional heart arrhythmia.

Why is potassium so important? It helps you function on a day-to-day basis. If you have a business meeting, an interview, some boxes to load on and off the truck, or a day chocked full of classes, having enough potassium is key to your success. You will be happier and more comfortable doing your job. Without this important mineral, you will get tired and weak, perhaps forgetting much of what you needed to remember. So grab a banana on your way out the door in the morning, or have some melon ready for breakfast. It is the little things that contribute so heavily to keeping our bodies healthy and strong.

Rice and the Gluten-Free Diet

Celiac disease (CD) is an inherited autoimmune disorder with symptoms ranging in severity from abdominal pain, gas and diarrhea, to anemia, joint pain and skin disorders, to name a few. It is estimated that CD affects 1 in 133 people in Canada and these numbers are growing. In fact, this segment of the population is increasing so much that according to a survey sanctioned by the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association (CFRA), foodservice professionals agree that gluten-free entrées, that may include rice, are an ‘up-and-coming’ menu trend.

Individuals with CD or gluten sensitivity are restricted to a gluten-free diet (GFD). This means avoiding proteins found in the grains wheat, rye and barley. The alternative, for most, is to resort to purchasing gluten-free products. However, these products are often priced at a premium and, more importantly, can be low in fibre, iron and B vitamins.

A healthy and cost-efficient gluten-free grain alternative for those with CD is rice. Brown or white rice is an excellent source of protein with eight essential amino acids, and contains 15 vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, potassium and iron and, in the case of brown rice, selenium and fibre. Rice is also allergen-free, low in calories and contains no cholesterol, sodium or fat. According to Canada’s Food Guide, a half-cup (125 mL) of brown rice equals one serving of a whole grain. Children require three to six servings of grain products per day, while adults require six to eight.

Shelley Case, RD, a leading international celiac nutrition expert and Canadian Celiac Association professional advisory board member, suggests incorporating rice into your daily diet whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Listed below are some of Case’s recommended ways to make this gluten-free grain a staple in your GFD:

• Start the day with cream of brown rice hot cereal; add dried fruit, a spoonful of ground flax and dash of vanilla and cinnamon.

• Cook double batches of rice to have on hand for the next meal. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for up to six months.

• Add rice to homemade soups or cooked rice to canned soups.

• Extend meatloaf or hamburger patties with cooked rice.

• Mix rice with beans in southwestern-inspired recipes.

• Brown rice flour adds fibre and a nutty flavour in baked goods. Whether using brown or white rice flour, it is best combined with other GF flours to make a better textured product than using a single GF flour.

Hypnosis has long been used to help people lose weight. There have been multiple studies that have shown the long-term benefits of hypnosis on weight loss. In one meta-analysis, researchers found that after receiving several sessions of hypnosis, overweight women lost on average of 11.83 pounds while women who did not receive hypnosis lost 6 pounds. This means that the hypnosis group lost 97% more pounds than the non-hypnosis group.

What is even more astonishing is the follow-up that was performed on the participants of the study. Researchers found that those who received hypnosis lost an average of 14.88 pounds during the follow-up. This compares to only 6.03 pounds in the non-hypnosis group. The participants who received hypnosis lost 147% more weight than those who did not use hypnosis to lose weight.

This study shows that hypnosis is not only beneficial in helping people lose weight in the short term, but it helps people continue to lose weight even after treatment has ended. This is powerful information that can help a lot of people reach a healthier weight.

“Fat-and-Happy”… Is It True? Study Tells All…

Ever heard the phrase, “Fat-n-Happy?”…

Of course you have. We used to refer to obese guys as a “jolly fat-man”… or perhaps someone who is overweight as “fat-n-happy”.

Is it true? Can (gasp) being overweight actually make you happy?

Rather than giving you my opinion on the matter, I take a look at three national studies on this page.

And I’m NOT an alarmist… I’m a rationalist. But stats like these do not lie.

P.S.  I can tell you from my own first-hand experience, which I document in “Fit Over 40″, that my personal 10-year-journey through the muck of obesity was ANYTHING but happy.

I was depressed, to the point of suicide at times (thankfully I never went that far.) I was socially hidden. I wore “fat-clothes” all the time. The few times I HAD to wear jeans or dress pants I rushed home to change into sweats because they were just too damn uncomfortable to tolerate.

Bottom line:  I was “fat-n-miserable”.

I think most people who are overweight or obese feel more despair, sadness, or perhaps just really frustrated than “happy”. Of course you can be happy and be any size, color, shape, etc. But I’ll tell you from my experience that I am MUCH happier now that I’m fit and trim.

Part of that is just because I feel better. The other part is how the brain functions. When you’re more active, you release more “feel-good” hormones… and these are powerful anti-blues hormones… they really make you feel like a champ. At least that’s been my experience.
